A Brief History

San Antonio is a charming small town in Pasco County, Florida, founded by settlers in the 1880s. The town was initially named Saint Anthony after the establishment of a catholic mission there by Edmund F. Dunne. In 1887, the Orange Belt Railway started its service to San Antonio, making the small town an important stop. This railroad connected several settlements across Florida, bringing more businesses and settlers into the town. The town changed its name to Lake Jovita in the 1920s to capitalize on the Florida Land Boom. The Jovita Golf Course was also built in the 1920s on the former Corrigan property, attracting many internationally known golfers like Gene Serazen. Unfortunately, the golf course didn’t survive the great depression. However, it has since been rebuilt and expanded. Many street names were also changed, replacing the explicitly catholic ones with secular ones. A decade later, the town’s name was reverted to San Antonio, retaining the secularized street names. Citrus growing and agriculture became crucial industries in the area.Education-wise, the town wasn’t left behind. It had two schools, St. Leo and Holy Name Academy. The former was a college preparatory school for boys, while the latter was a private girls’ school in the 1960s. By 1965, both schools closed their secondary wings to avail the facilities for St. Leo Junio College, which today is Saint Leo University. The development, followed by the construction of I-75 west of San Antonio, FL, brought more commercial and residential developments. However, the town remained small and largely agricultural-based. Busch Gardens Theme Park was later opened north of the town in the 1970s, bringing significant growth and tourism to the area. In the 1980s-1990s, there were accelerated developments in San Antonio and its surrounding areas, resulting in commercial strips and residential subdivisions to serve the then-increasing population.
